Since Mattel first launched the fashion-focused doll in 1959, Barbie has remained one of the most popular and iconic toys in the world. The doll has since been spun off into an entire line, along with a number of direct-to-video movies, games, and plenty of branded merchandise. Fast-forward 50 years to 2009, when film studio Universal first set their sights on adapting the property into a live-action film. Given the complex social changes that have happened around the line since then, however, this hasn’t proven to be an easy task....

Following the lifting of embargoes on reviews of director Zack Snyder’s hotly anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the critical consensus has been mixed to negative, despite the Warner Bros. production having broken pre-ticket sales for the superhero film genre and garnering positive word-of-mouth from some who have already seen the film in test screenings. Apple Store employees are set to get a rare companywide bonus this fall. Sources say that Apple will give $1,000 to Apple Store employees who have been with the company since March 2021, while those who joined more recently will get a $500 bonus. Bloomberg points out that Apple rarely gives companywide bonuses such as this one: Apple’s decision to give bonuses to its retail employees comes as companies face continued labor shortages....

After a lot of pressure from the European Union and other governments around the world, it seems that Apple is for the first time considering making deep changes to iOS and the App Store. According to a Bloomberg report, the company is planning to open up even more iOS functionality to third-party apps, including the browser engine and NFC. In recent years, Apple has considerably loosened the restrictions in iOS when it comes to what third-party developers can have access to....

Apple is requesting the reinstatement of exclusions from tariffs on the Apple Watch and several Mac Pro components that are imported from China. Apple currently pays a 7.5% tariff on Apple Watches imported from China, and seven key Mac Pro components face a 25% tariff. The policy was originally initiated under the Trump administration. CNBC first reported on the public comments from Apple published on the US Trade Representative’s website this week....

Jason Momoa is currently filming Aquaman, and he got a heartwarming birthday surprise on the set. This set, of course, is where James Wan is shooting the seafaring solo movie, which will be released after Momoa’s proper DC debut in Justice League. As part of hitting back at spyware company NSO, Apple alerted a Polish prosecutor that her iPhone appears to have been compromised by Pegasus. This also gives us our first look at the text of Apple’s security alerts. Apple is today increasing the prices of its Apple Music and Apple TV+ subscription services. The Apple One bundle price is also rising in unison. The Apple Music monthly price has been upped by ~$1 for individuals and ~$2 for families. Apple TV+ is rising by $2 (which only has one tier and supports Family Sharing on all plans). Apple is teaming up with California State University to provide iPad Air devices to up to 35,000 first-year and new transfer students. The announcement was made by California State University today, saying that students will receive an iPad Air, an Apple Pencil, and a Smart Keyboard Folio. In the announcement, Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of education and enterprise marketing, said: California State University will kick off this new partnership in the upcoming fall 2021 semester across eight of its different campuses....
