AppleCare+ has been quietly upgraded today, following the announcement of the iPhone 14. Previously, AppleCare+ allowed for two incidents of accidental damage cover every year. Starting today, that cap has been lifted. Apple now touts unlimited repairs for accidental damage protection, for as long as you keep paying. Unless you are really clumsy, you probably wouldn’t exceed two repairs per year anyway. However, it’s nice to have that peace of mind of unlimited repairs, without incurring additional charges....

The rapid pace of Apex Legends provides fans of the battle royale genre an incredibly competitive title to dedicate their time and skill towards. With a cast of appealing and charismatic heroes, Apex combines the hero shooter genre with the Battle Royale genre masterfully. The game rewards first-person shooter skill as much as it forces players to work well with their squad and develop a strong sense of teamwork. The “SportsKit” home screen widget includes the ability to receive real-time updates of sports matches. Right now, Siri can already show sports scores, so Apple probably wants to expand this interaction to other parts of iOS and tvOS. One thing to keep in mind about this API is that SportsKit is currently being developed as a private framework, meaning the feature won’t be available to every developer – which makes sense since sports-related content usually requires special deals and Apple might have to work directly with providers....

Apple on Monday was fined €1 million in France by the Paris Commercial Court. The court accused the company of imposing abusive commercial clauses on developers who distribute their apps on the App Store. As reported by Reuters, the ruling only requires Apple to pay the €1 million fine, which is about $1.06 million, due to how the company manages the App Store. This time, Apple wasn’t required to make any changes to the App Store since the European Union’s Digital Markets Act is already expected to force Apple to change the App Store guidelines anyway....

Following the release of iOS 16.1 earlier this week, Apple is now releasing iOS 15.7.1 to the public. The update, which comes for users who don’t want to install iOS 16 yet or who have an older device, brings recommended security enhancements for iPhone and iPad users. The official release notes for the update don’t mention any new features beyond the security enhancements. After all, those who want access to new features should install iOS 16 at this point....

Following an expansion to Europe earlier this month, Apple has made another improvement to its self-service repair program. As reported by Six Colors, Apple’s self-service repair program now supports Mac desktops as well as the Studio Display, but only in the United States. With today’s expansion, the self-service repair program now offers genuine Apple parts, tools, and manuals for the M1 iMac, M1 Mac mini, and Mac Studio. The Studio Display is also included in this expansion....

Apple has today been granted a patent for a graphical display concept it calls virtual paper, and two things struck me about it – one about its origins, the other about what it may tell us about future Apple design language. The patent is for a visual representation of paper in three-dimensional form, which is, of course, the type of user interface most applicable to the upcoming Apple mixed-reality headset …...

Apple will be releasing a software update to fix the camera shake / rattling issue affecting iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. Apple told Bloomberg that the update will be available next week. This will resolve customer concerns that the violent camera shake problems may have been a result of a hardware defect with their new phones. Instead, users should be able to simply install the software update when it is available....
