Annihilation filmmaker Alex Garland has set up his newest project, the fantasy film The Toymaker’s Secret, with Paloma Baeza set to direct. Garland’s Annihilation released earlier this year to critical acclaim, but rather soft box office returns. Overseas audiences didn’t even get to experience the film on the big screen either, as Paramount sold the international rights to Netflix. With Annihilation struggling at the box office, and Garland reportedly clashing with studio brass over the movie’s cut and distribution, the inventive director will next take his talents to television....

In mid-2021, Apple provided customer data to hackers after they masqueraded themselves as law enforcement officials, shows a new report by Bloomberg. According to people familiar with the matter, the company provided basic subscriber details due to forged “emergency data requests.” The publication explains that “normally, such requests are only provided with a search warrant or subpoena signed by a judge, according to the people. However, such emergency requests don’t require a court order....

Earlier this week, Apple rolled out stricter verification requirements for its Online Education Store in the United States after previously not requiring any sort of verification. Apple on Thursday updated its homepage with a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on September 8, 2022 at the age of 96. Now, Apple.com’s main webpage features a photo of the Queen with the message “In Memoriam. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.” The photo highlighted by Apple was taken by Dorothy Wilding on February 26, 1952, when Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne. As visual effects have continued to evolve, more and more genre films have used them to bring fantastical visions to life. But in some cases, the CGI can end up being a crutch. Both Marvel and DC have faced criticism for an over-reliance on CGI, even while the Star Wars universe has moved back to its roots with more practical effects....

Apple is bringing back free community programming to retail locations worldwide. Apple Camp is returning to Apple Stores, bringing free sessions to children and families each week from June 20 to August 31. The Apple Camp program has been running for 20 years and now offers two-hour formats. Participants will have the chance to create their own digital comic book about “protecting and celebrating the planet.” Creative Pros will lead the new Apple Camp activity, Art Lab: Comic Book Adventure with Your Family....

Apple is rolling out iOS 12.5.5 to older iPhone and iPad models today. The company says the update includes notable security fixes and improvements, and is recommended for all users. The update is available for the iPad Air, the iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3, as well as the 6th gen iPod touch, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. All of these devices were dropped from support with iOS 13, but Apple has continued to update them with important security fixes since then....
