Back in 2019, Apple announced that it would be spending $2.5 billion to help tackle the California housing crisis and address the issue of skyrocketing home prices in the state. Apple has published a new press release today with an update on this initiative, saying that it has deployed $1 billion in affordable housing support across California. Apple says that its $1 billion in funding has provided capital for new projects and housing challenges across 25 California counties....

A couple of weeks after adding a new “Leaving Soon” tab to Apple Arcade, some of the original launch games have now been removed from the subscription service. In addition, this tab that showed the games leaving Arcade is also gone from the App Store. Apple Arcade launched in 2019. Three years after the release of the service, some of the contracts with developers are expiring and Apple decided not to renew them, as spotted by MacRumors....

An Apple Chinese New Year celebration features cartoon tigers dropping as you scroll down the Chinese homepage, in recognition of the year of the tiger… Specifically, it’s the year of the water tiger, as China Travel explains. The lunar new year begins tomorrow, on February 1. The Chinese zodiac tiger years come every 12 years as a cycle. In Chinese element theory, each zodiac sign is associated with one of the five elements: Gold (Metal), Wood, Water, Fire, or Earth....

Apple TV+ today officially announced a new limited series project about Benjamin Franklin. Michael Douglas will take up the lead role as the American polymath. The show is based off the book ‘A Great Improvisation’. The Benjamin Franklin series is the latest project to hail from ex-HBO chief Richard Plepler’s overall deal with Apple, under his Eden Productions banner. It is being developed as a co-production between ITV Studios America and Apple Studios....

Thor, Rocket, and Groot Stick Together This won’t be a surprise to anyone who’s been following the marketing and merchandise of Avengers: Infinity War so far, but the God of Thunder will be joining forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy. What the EW report confirms is that we’ll see Thor, Groot, and Rocket team-up for most of the film as they pursue a special mission to stop Thanos. We’ve already seen Thor, Rocket, and Groot figures promoted together, and Thor: Ragnarok proved how comedic the God of Thunder can be when paired with the right characters....

[SPOILERS ahead for those not caught up on The Flash.] - The CW’s DC Comics shared universe first began with the grounded take on comic book superheroes with Arrow, following Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) as he returned to his home and attempted to save his city. The first spinoff, The Flash, took a notably lighter route in tackling superheroes, helped along by the optimism of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). The CW’s DC TV universe has since grown to include the ensemble time travel drama Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, which aired its first season on CBS and will make the move to The CW starting with its second season....

Batman & The Shadow will once again be paired together in a comic-book event, pitting them against an ancient evil. The Shadow/Batman comes from DC Comics and Dynamite Entertainment, using two classic characters in a new story. Given that The Shadow was a direct influence on the creation of Batman, it makes sense that the pair continue their adventures together. Writer Steve Orlando and artist Giovanni Timpano are taking the reins as they challenge the pair with the problems of morality as a vigilante....

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice pits two of the world’s most beloved superheroes against each other in a super-powered battle royal that has already divided fans worldwide – not just in terms of which hero will come out on top, but whether or not dark storylines of heroes fighting heroes (also the subject of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War) should really be the future direction of the genre, which already faced steep criticism for what some felt was an unnecessarily grim finale to Dawn’s predecessor, Man of Steel....

As part of the this year’s Nintendo Direct at E3 2019, the team showed off the highly-anticipated new Animal Crossing title for the Nintendo Switch — Animal Crossing New Horizons. How scary is Annabelle Comes Home? Written and directed by Gary Dauberman, the supernatural horror film continues the storyline established by Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation. The premise is based on a haunted doll named Annabelle, which was first introduced in The Conjuring, and most recently appeared in The Curse of La Llorona (as well as DC movies Aquaman and Shazam!). Annabelle Comes Home represents the seventh installment of The Conjuring universe....

With top executives leaving the most traditional Silicon Valley business, Apple is suffering another loss as Nick Law, its VP of Marcom Integration, who is departing from the company after a little more than two years in this role. The departure of Nick Law was revealed by Ad Age quoting “multiple people familiar with the matter.” According to the publication, in June of 2019, “the longtime agency vet announced he would be leaving his post as Publicis Groupe chief creative officer to join the Cupertino, California-based giant....

Apple has a big announcement for the repair industry today. The new “Self Service Repair” program will allow customers to complete their own repairs on their devices, including common repairs such as battery replacements, iPhone screen replacements, and more. Through the new Self Service Repair program, customers will have access to Apple genuine parts and tools to complete the repairs. Apple says that Self Service Repair will first be available for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, followed by M1 Macs in the future....

Someone identifying as “Thrax” has managed to successfully send an offensive notification to Apple News users through Fast Company’s account. Evidence of the apparent hack began populating Twitter on Tuesday night as iPhone users posted screenshots confirming the same experience. The offensive notification ended with the message that “Thrax was here”, although it’s currently unclear who this identity is claiming to be. While it’s not known how exactly this actually happened, it is highly unlike that the Apple News platform was compromised in any way....
