Apple has always had policies to not provide repair services for lost or stolen devices, but only if they had the Find My feature enabled. Now the company will also deny iPhone repairs if the device is reported as lost or stolen in the GSMA Device Registry. According to an internal memo sent to Apple Store employees and Apple Authorized Service Providers (via MacRumors), the company will now use the GSMA Device Registry database to check if a device is registered as lost before providing any repairs....

Director Ridley Scott’s planned Alien: Covenant sequels are reportedly shrouded in uncertainty right now, with 20th Century Fox currently busy “reassessing” the franchise’s future. This news comes several months after Alien: Covenant was released to disappointing box office receipts, with the film’s box office totals adding up to just a little over half of what 2012’s Prometheus made. While Covenant was originally pitched and built up as being a return to form for the Alien franchise, with the latest installment not only adopting the same name but also basic structure and tone of the original 1979 Alien film, it proved to be a much different experience than some fans might have been expecting....

Spinning out of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel aired on the WB for five seasons from 1999-2004. The series focused on the titular vampire with a soul (David Boreanaz) as he left Sunnydale - and his true love - behind. Setting up shop in L.A., Angel became something of a paranormal private investigator, led from one lost soul to another by his half-demon companion, Doyle. He was also joined by Buffy alum and former mean girl, Cordelia Chase, and later, ousted watcher, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce....

Apple has confirmed to me that it already scans iCloud Mail for CSAM, and has been doing so since 2019. It has not, however, been scanning iCloud Photos or iCloud backups. The clarification followed me querying a rather odd statement by the company’s anti-fraud chief: that Apple was “the greatest platform for distributing child porn.” That immediately raised the question: If the company wasn’t scanning iCloud photos, how could it know this?...

When the iPhone 13 was first released in September, repair shops quickly noticed that if you replaced the display, Face ID would stop working. Now, Apple is backtracking on this decision to limit iPhone 13 screen repairs, according to a new report from The Verge. As iFixit detailed in-depth last week, this change to the iPhone 13 repair process meant that repair shops would need to move over a tiny control chip from the original screen to the new screen in order to retain Face ID support....

Apple has released a software update to iOS 16.2 beta 3 and iPadOS 16.2 beta 3 today that claims to include an important security fix. Details of the problem are not currently available, but the update is marked clearly as a security-specific fix. It’s also possible that there is no actual security fix. The update could be a test to demonstrate Apple’s Rapid Security Response system....

Apple is in the works scaling its movie business on its Apple TV+ service. Its deal with Paramount Pictures partner Skydance Media has been the buzz around Hollywood as of late. Reported by Variety, this agreement closely resembles a “put deal”. What’s “put deal”? Well, it’s a rare Hollywood arrangement where a distributor is obligated to release the movies its partner chooses. Through this pact, Skydance will produce at least two films each year with a $125 million budget....

Over the last year, Australia has been tightening its laws to regulate Big Techs. Now, the government is considering new laws to regulate digital payment services like Apple Pay. According to a report by Reuters, Australian treasurer Josh Frydenberg said “he would ‘carefully consider’ that and other recommendations from a government-commissioned report into whether the payments system had kept pace with advances in technology and changes in consumer demand.” The Australian report recommends the government be given the power to designate tech companies as payment providers and to establish a strategic plan between government and industry for an integrated licensing framework for payments systems to be developed....
